TURMOIL

With Collection+, the Sammlung Moderne Kunst (Modern Art Collection) in the Pinakothek der Moderne has been presenting works from its holdings since 2019. New acquisitions, discoveries and thematic focuses show the diversity of the holdings in collaboration with partners and foundations.

In "TURMOIL", works by the Franco-German painter Hans Hartung (1904 - 1989) are presented together with works by the contemporary German artist Maria VMier (lives and works in New York and Munich). Hartung, one of the most important representatives of Art Informel and lyrical abstraction, dealt with themes such as the beginning and end of the line, but above all understood the line more as an abstraction of energy and less as a descriptive form. Maria VMier's gestural painting stands in Hartung's tradition and is at the same time influenced by her studies in sculpture. Her large-format works on paper look like snapshots of abstract bodies that seem to be in constant motion.

All of Hartung and VMier's works have a pulsating quality, with concentrated gestural expression forming the common thread.

The presentation takes place in cooperation with the Written Art Collection, from which Hartung's works originate. Thanks to the financial support of the Written Art Collection, the works by Maria VMier could be acquired for the Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Sammlung Moderne Kunst (Modern Art Collection).
