Anish Kapoor – HOWL

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Housing four institutions under one roof devoted to art, works on paper, architecture and design, the Pinakothek der Moderne ranks as one of the great art museums in Europe. At the centre of the building is the glass rotunda that serves as a vibrant meeting place. From 2019 on the rotunda will regularly feature special, site-specific works.

Anish Kapoor is considered one of today’s most influential contemporary artists. At the invitation of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen the artist has created a site-specific sculpture for the Rotunda, the central hub of the Pinakothek der Moderne, that will be installed on 16 September 2020 to mark the opening of the Pinakothek der Moderne exactly 18 years ago. Kapoor’s installation will transform viewers’ experience of the space and form a focal point in the ‘Kunstareal’ museum complex in Munich in 2020/21. Kapoor is world renowned for his often monumental and enigmatic works that traverse the boundaries between sculpture and architecture. His installation for the Rotunda continues his exploration of the symbiotic relationship between building and object. The immense PVC sculpture will fill the Rotunda, creating a vast monochrome void space that will challenge the viewer’s physical and sensory perception of interior and exterior, material and immaterial; a work that is both object and what Kapoor has termed the ‘non-object’.

Media Conference & Artist Talk

Recording of the media conference & artist talk with Anish Kapoor and Oliver Kase (Head of Modern Art at Sammlung Moderne Kunst, Pinakothek der Moderne) that was broadcast live on YouTube on Sept. 16th 2020, the eighteenth anniversary of the museum.

A short section of the live talk (around 29:52) is not included in the edited release because the dialogue here stalled due to connection problems. During this part of the conversation Anish Kapoor talked about "Art as Fiction", concave/convex forms in relation to HOWL. It is intended to continue the dialogue with Anish Kapoor on site at the Pinakothek der Moderne as soon as it is possible again.

NEW OCEAN SEA CYCLE: PINAKOTHEK ED. 1/14 – BAFFIN

Online premiere | SO 16.05.2021 | 20:00–21:00 on ARTE CONCERT and BR Classic Concert

The US-American choreographer Richard Siegal works with his company Ballet of Difference, which is based at Schauspiel Köln and deeply rooted in Munich, on hybrid forms in which not only different artistic disciplines but also aesthetic and scientific perspectives interpenetrate each other. In his work NEW OCEAN, for example, Siegal integrates a sculptural approach of dancing bodies together with ecological questions of global warming into a mathematical choreographic system. For the Pinakothek der Moderne, Richard Siegal is working on a choreographic form that allows the dancers' bodies to actively enter into a dialogue with the architecture and the sculpture HOWL.

A production by Schauspiel Köln and Tanz Köln

Supported by the Ministry for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in cooperation with the NRWKULTURsekretariat, by the Cultural Department of the City of Munich and the Kunststiftung NRW

A co-production with the Muffatwerk Munich
