Faded Future Taiwan photographs by Michael Nischke

About the exhibition

The exhibition FADED FUTURE at Matti Suuronen’s FUTURO house, located in front of the Pinakothek der Moderne’s main entrance, showcases a captivating selection of 15 photographs by Munich-based photographer Michael Nischke, offering a richly contrasting display that captures the decline of a futuristic holiday park in Taiwan.

The UFO Village – Wanli, Taiwan
In the early 1980s, businessman Su Ming (1922 – 2000) built a holiday park in Wanli, in northern Taiwan, featuring buildings that were simple replicas of the famous VENTURO and FUTURO plastic houses designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen.
However, just a few years after completion, the first houses were abandoned.
The unfavorable location and the harsh weather conditions led to the rapid decline of the complex, gradually transforming the futuristic holiday park into a lost place.
Munich-based photographer Michael Nischke has spent several years documenting this decline in a series of striking photographs. It now seems that this chapter is also coming to an end. Large areas of wasteland appeared for the first time in 2026, and it seems as if everything has been completely wiped out. Many buildings have been demolished, as has the once-overgrown vegetation – FADED FUTURE.

Exhibition catalogue
A comprehensive illustrated catalogue is being published to accompany the exhibition. It features over 90 photographs from the ‘UFO Village’ series, taken by Michael Nischke between 2020 and 2026.
This impressive exploration of the site recounts the transformation and gradual decline of a former futuristic residential development on Taiwan’s north coast.
The catalogue is available at the Pinakothek der Moderne museum shop and at www.galerie-nischke.com.
