ReflexION JOINT EXHIBITION OF ALL 4 MUSEUMS IN THE PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE

About the exhibition

An exhibition of the Sammlung Moderne Kunst (Modern Art Collection), the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München (Collection of Prints and Drawings), the Architekturmuseum der TUM (Architecture Museum) and Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum, to mark 100 years of Die Neue Sammlung.

While the first jointly curated anniversary exhibition focussed on the founding years of Die Neue Sammlung in the 1920s and 1930s, the exhibition ReflexION covers a longer period, extending to the present day. It deals with the phenomena of mirrors, light and transparency in the fields of art, architecture and design from the 1960s to this day. The concept of reflection is to be understood both literally and symbolically.

The mirror has the physical function of reflecting light and can in this way create an image. People can see themselves in their own reflection. The mirror is considered a symbol of vanity but also of self-awareness, wisdom and truth. Architecture, design objects and works of art address these different forms of self-questioning and the examination of our own unique features, strengths and weaknesses, as well as the discrepancy between the ideal and reality.

This interdisciplinary exhibition shows how luminous and transparent surfaces as well as mirroring materials can be used to capture a subject’s essence through reflection. In this process, visitors themselves also become a medium of reflection.
