In this episode of ONE ON ONE, painter and sculptor Thomas Scheibitz (born 1968) discusses the “Ensemble of Eight Coloured Structures” (1977–80) by constructivist painter and sculptor Hermann Glöckner (1889–1987), for which he created a platform. He reflects on the variable arrangement of the forms, personal memories of Glöckner's work, and the connection to his own visual language.
Man hat eine dienende Rolle, aber es ist auch falsch, wenn man sich da versteckt unter dieser dienenden Rolle. Also im besten Falle habe ich einen Verstärker geliefert für etwas, das schon eigentlich vollkommen auch da ist als Werk.
Painter and sculptor Thomas Scheibitz (*1968) doubtlessly is one of the key figures of his generation. His contribution to the German pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennial attracted attention internationally. Ever since he is known as an artist to surprise his audience with his multi-facetted oeuvre.
Scheibitz is not afraid to enter a dialog with the masters of Modernism, as he proved in the remarkable 2019 exhibition Pablo Picasso x Thomas Scheibitz. Sign Scene Lexicon at Berlin’s Museum Berggruen. Here, he juxtaposed his pictorial worlds with particular works by Picasso. This lead to surprising correspondences and to new insights into both oeuvres.
Ich musste mir diese Baukörper selber aus Pappe nachbauen, speziell bei diesem Sockel, und habe dann mit diesen Volumen im Original vor den Materialien gestanden und dann doch immer wieder den Entwurf verschoben, wieder neu angesetzt. Und eigentlich egal, und das ist das Schöne daran, egal wie man die Baukörper stellt, sie müssen sozusagen auf diesem Plateau eigentlich alles aushalten und auch umgekehrt.
